Phase 1 of The Sanctuary Project sees the basement converted to a fully refurbished, welcoming and usable space for the first time.
The design incorporates a WC for public use, a quiet meeting space for study and work with a kitchenette, a large study space for students, along with a storage and workshop space for the building.
All fully-accessible and open to the public via the stairs and new lift that services the area.
Creating a quiet, contemplative outdoor space for our community has been a carefully-held wish when creating the designs for the North wing of the building.
The North Garden will be easily accessible to the public from both the library, with the addition of beautiful double doors, and from Renfrew road.
The calming space will be a biodiverse haven that holds room for our Paranirvana Buddha statue, a place for prayer and puja, and a bespoke light offering cabinet.
Phase 1 sees the reconfiguration of the Tara Room into the central office space for the Jamyang team, putting work and service at the heart of the building.
The library becomes a multi-functional space; on evenings and weekends it is a quiet space to read and study; during the day it functions as a meeting space for Jamyang and its projects.
The floor here is evened out to make the space truly accessible and the ground floor will now be serviced by a lift also.
7 bedrooms, including one with a fully accessible bathroom, are being created on the first floor, inviting those who offer service at Jamyang a space with natural light, fresh air and comfortable surroundings.
Serviced by both the lift and reconfigured staircase, the first floor also accommodates a small lounge space where volunteers can relax and rest in private, laundry facilities and 2 fully fitted bathrooms.
The space is designed to be flexible, so we can also offer private rooms to invited teachers.
The top floor of the North Wing will be reconfigured in phase 1, providing a spacious new suite for our resident teacher, Geshe Namdak, which includes private quarters and a secluded work space, as well as rooms for our Monastic Sangha.
In the heart of London, Jamyang is creating a dedicated living space for urban monastics, where they can live, study, practice and offer service in a supportive environment.
